What is a biblical worldview?

Before we start with what a biblical worldview is, I suggest we answer the overall question of what is a worldview?

Simply put, a worldview is the outline we use to make sense of life and the world around us. Whether you realize it or not, you already have some type of worldview, where everything you believe to be true instigates your emotions, your reactions, the decisions you make, and the actions you take in certain situations. This is what is known as a Personal Worldview.

A biblical worldview, sometimes referred to a Christian worldview, is based on the true Word of God. When you view the Bible as true and believe it will never change, you begin to use it as a guideline for everything you say and do. Someone with a biblical worldview believes his main reason for living on earth is to love and serve God.

This worldview, however, is remarkably different from a personal worldview. Think of a worldview as putting on a pair of glasses.

If your glasses have dirty, discolored, or broken lenses or the wrong prescription, you won't be able to perceive the world correctly. This is what happens with a personal worldview. A personal worldview is constantly changing based on our circumstances and the environment around us. They can also be changed by what we watch on television or movies, what we hear in music, what we read in newspapers or magazines or books, and even what we are taught in school.

However, if your glasses’ lenses are clean, clear, and made for your eyes you’ll view the world as the Creator intended. This is how a biblical worldview should be. A biblical worldview is based on the word of God who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and unchanging, our worldview can never change. Since God is the Creator of everything, He also created the basis of what constitutes as truth. The Bible contains the words of God, and since God cannot lie, we know that it is the truth.

We'd love to be able to view the world with 20/20 perfect vision, but due to sin, our view is distorted.

A Biblical worldview requires a community no matter where we think we are in our walk of faith. Being around other believers gives us the chance to learn and strengthen our biblical worldview. It can also provide us with others who will help correct us when we take off our “spiritual glasses” or stumble on our walk.

So starting today, I challenge you to put on your “spiritual glasses” everyday, as well as to seek out that community of fellow believers who will help you keep your glasses clean and scratch free. Remember to not let your spiritual vision be blinded by the glare of what your physical eyes see.
